FAMILY HONOURS PHOTOJOURNALIST DR SAM NZIMA

The family of celebrated photographer Dr Sam Nzima have announced that they are building a legacy centre for him in Mpumalanga on Friday.

Nzima captured the iconic picture of Hector Peterson during the June 16, 1976 student uprising in Soweto. The Sam Nzima Legacy centre will have a museum and a school of Journalism among many.

Thulani Nzima, chairperson of the Sam Nzima Foundation says, “We are going to build an interpretive centre which will house the indigenous knowledge of the people of Mpumalanga. We as Africans are stories and Knowledge of our people resides with the elders. So, we want to make sure that we harvest that knowledge and make it available through the centre…”

He explained that the museum will telle the story of not just their family member but the story of Mpumalanga and that they will also honour his Journalism skills by complementing the Centre with a Journalism school.

All of these were revealed during the Inaugural Sam Nzima Memorial Lecture  in Johannesburg.
