PRIMARY SCHOOLS SET TO RETURN TO NORMAL ATTENDANCE

Grade R through to seven will be returning to daily attendance from the 26th of July 2021. Newly gazette regulations under the Disaster Management Act allow for normal attendance. This includes special needs schools. The regulations allow for lessons to be taught outside of the classroom where practical as long as covid-19 safety measures are maintained according to the SABC.

About the movement in school, the teachers will rotate the classroom and not pupils, in order to minimize movement around the school during teaching time. Schools that cannot return to a traditional timetable must contact the Department of Education and set out steps to return to a normal timetable.

Contact sports, which are those where players are unable to maintain a physical distance of at least one and a half meters, will remain suspended. The Department of Basic Education made the announcement on Wednesday, 19th May shortly after a virtual meeting with the Council of Education Ministers.
