SA IEC PRIORITISE COVID-19 MEASURES

The Independent Election Commission has updated that it’s prioritizing COVID-19 protocols government elections nears in October.

The commission briefed the Western Cape Province legislature’s government committee that elections will be possible in the coming months. IEC’s Michael Hendricks said the next big move is preparing for the local government elections was the general voter registration to be held on 17 and 18 July.

More than 1,500 voting stations and about 4,600 staff members have already been recruited and in put in place for the elections, while over three million voters have registered in the Eastern Cape.

“Social distancing is being practiced and we are also placing the indelible mark with a liquid which will be applied using cotton buds.” Hendricks said addressing the possibility of increased infections.

18,000 staff will be needed on voting day on 27 October 2021.
