Severe COVID-19 patients are said to be most likely to die in Africa than in other regions in the world.
Researchers into the subject have concluded that Countries in Africa are lacking in equipment and specialised stuff which put severe COVID-19 patients at risk of dying.
Professor Bruce Biccard from Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town says, “Our study is the first to give a detailed and comprehensive picture of what is happening to people who are severely ill with COVID-19 in Africa, with data from multiple countries and hospitals.”
He explained that their findings points that the shortage of equipment in Intensive care units and critical care beds compromises the ability of providing quality care to patients.
The study revealed that almost half of 3000 patients admitted in Intensive care units in 10 African Countries died without receiving oxygen. The study was based on South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria and Malawi.
