WHO: COVID-19 DEATHS TWO TO THREE TIMES HIGHER THAN REPORTED

The World Health Organisation on Friday said there are three times more deaths due to COVID-19 being reported around the world.

According to global health statistics report from thee WHO, a lot more people have died since the beginning of the pandemic that would have not had it not been for COVID-19 and other ailments.

“Total deaths are at least two or three times higher than officially reported,” said Samia Asma, the assistance director –general at WHO.

Asma said about six to 8 million deaths can be attributed to the pandemic at present.  She said they have been working with countries to recover the exact numbers so they can prepare for the coming wave.

“Excess mortality gives us a better picture, because it captures both of these direct and indirect effects.” Said William Msemburi, data analyst at WHO.
